1. Darren was born on May 24, 2001 at Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Filipino parents, Lyndon and Marinel Espanto. His parents, originally from Nueva Vizcaya, migrated to Canada to work as nurses. Despite this, Darren speaks fluent Tagalog and was raised with a Filipino upbringing, despite growing up in a western environment.

2. At age 2, his interest in music began to emerge, as he sang the songs of classic Disney Films such as “The Lion King” and “Sleeping Beauty”. His father, a talented singer himself, guided Darren with vocal lessons as his mother used her skills in dance to teach him stage presence and performance. Such training eventually molded Darren into the entertainer he is today.

3. Who knew that such a talented kid who now performs for large venues of screaming crowds, was once upon a time very timid? The now-budding pop star only ever unleashed his vocal skills during karaoke in the presence of close relatives. There was definitely no hint of said shyness during the singer’s first solo show. On October 4, 2014, “Darren Espanto: The Total Performance Concert” was staged at the Music Museum.

4. Before The Voice Kids of the Philippines, Darren had already joined various singing competitions abroad. In 2011, he won during the Masters Finals of the Pinoy Singing Sensation at Edmonton, Canada. In 2012, he auditioned for the 5th season of the Next Star, a reality competition aired by YTV channel in Canada. He made it to the top 6 of the competition. Such experiences paved the way for more opportunities, eventually leading to his first single, music video, and even a guest spot in the Canadian teen sit-com, Life With Boys.

5. Darren’s first solo album was released in December 2014 and is now certified platinum. Stacking up singles on the top 40 charts are hits such as the aptly named “Stuck,” which tends to play on a loop inside our heads once heard.

6. For those who haven’t heard, Darren has decided to stay in the Philippines for good. After finishing second in the Voice Kids competition, fans worried he’d return to the career he had started in Canada. However, a recent interview confirmed that he is currently happy to stay and pursue his dreams.

7. His version of “Chandelier,” which he performed during the first anniversary of Wish 107.5, earned much local and global recognition. Some of the stars who praised his “effortless singing” are Nicki Minaj, Ashton Kutcher and Jessie J. The video of his performance was also named as the No. 4 Most Shared Video of 9gag.tv in 2015.
